Overview

The Model 615 Drive Point Piezometer is an affordable device to monitor shallow groundwater and soil vapour in suitable conditions.

The Solinst Drive Point Piezometers are usually installed as permanent well points but they can also be used for short term applications.

The Drive Points attach to the standard, inexpensive 3/4" (20mm) NPT stainless steel drive pipe which is widely available in plumbing and hardware stores.

To achieve high quality samples, polyethylene or PTFE lined tubing is attached to the stainless steel drive-point. Using small diameter equipment, groundwater sampling and hydraulic head measurements can be taken.

The Drive Point Piezometers can be driven into the ground by a direct push or drilling technology, including the manual slide hammer. To avoid smearing the screen or clogging during installation, a shielded version is also available.

Manual Slide Hammer

The Manual Slide Hammer can be used to install the Solinst Drive Point Piezometer inexpensively. Whilst the heavy duty drive point is being used, the slide hammer will impact and a tubing by-pass ensures that the tubing does not get damaged during installation.

FAQ's

660 Drive-Point Profilers - Drill rig hammers

615 Drive-Point Piezometers – Direct push/drilling methods

601 Standpipe Piezometers – Placed in a borehole or test pit

660 Drive-Point Profilers – Typically the limit is 9m below the water surface.

615 Drive-Point Piezometers – Typically 2-3m in loose deposits.

601 Standpipe Piezometers – Can go as deep as required.

615 Drive-Point Piezometers – Screened tips available in 6” and 1ft lengths. Can have a compression fitting, hose barb, or no barb as well as shielded options.

601 Standpipe Piezometers – Screened tips are available in 6”, 1ft, 2ft, and 3ft. These use a Vyon® filter.

  • 1ft screened extensions to lengthen the screened intake, with or without a barb
  • 25lbs slide hammer
  • A drive head assembly, including a drive head, 2 ft drive extension and a tubing bypass for installing with tubing
  • Sample tubing is a barb or compression fitting is being used (so sample water/vapour does come into contact with the pipe extensions)

For monitoring water levels:

  • 102 Water Level Meters with 10mm Probe
  • A 1” to ¾” stainless steel reducer coupling to install a Levelogger in a 1” drive extension section.

Sampling options include:

  • 410 Peristatic pump
  • 403 Mini inertial pump
  • Narrow diameter 429 Point-Source Bailer
The 601 and 615 are designed for permanent monitoring. So, neither are reusable, but the 615 can pulled out mechanically. However, grouting is the most favourable method of decommission on both of these pieces of equipment. The 660 Drive-point Profiler is a short-term monitoring point, therefore the hole left behind can be easily grouted using a grout tip Drive-point profiler.
The depth that these can be installed to depends on the material in which they are being installed in. Typically, you will get a deeper installation in peat over other ground materials.
