RS Hydro were faced with the challenging task of selecting the appropriate flow meters for two 25 mm diameter pipes in an underground location, approximately 100 meters from where the flow meter readout needed to be situated. This required careful consideration to ensure accurate and reliable flow measurement under difficult conditions. Despite the complexities of the project, RS Hydro successfully completed the survey and provided a solution that met the client's needs.
2 x 25mm diameter Siemens MAG5100W flow meter sensors with MAG6000 transmitters and over 250 meters of flow meter system cable.
Civil Engineering
RS Hydro's expertise were put to the test when they were approached to supply and install metering for two measurement points located deep underground in a canal shaft. As with any underground flow measurement project, extra considerations had to be taken into account, such as where the flow data read-out should be located, the length of the signal input/output cable needed to connect the measurement location and the data-read out, and the installation of flowmeters in tricky locations, such as in the dark or confined spaces.
To ensure the success of the project, RS Hydro engineers conducted an on-site survey, which involved analysing photos and fully understanding the application. The survey helped them to select a suitable flowmeter technology that could handle the point of measurement inside the underground canal shaft, over 100 meters away from ground level.
After completing the survey, RS Hydro produced a report summarising the technical challenges. One of the critical considerations was the risk of signal loss issues since the flowmeter read-out was located far away from the sensors. However, the signal cables of the Siemens MAG5100W and 6000 system were designed to reduce the risk of signal loss within the cables. Therefore, this electromagnetic flow meter system was recommended for the project.
The Siemens MAG-meters were then ordered and delivered to the engineering contractors for underground installation. Upon revisiting the site, RS Hydro engineers assisted with the installation by connecting the system's cables to the readouts and commissioning the flowmeter systems by checking flow-rates were realistic.
The result was two fully functional flowmeter systems that provided valuable information about the volumetric water flow-rate being pumped within the small diameter pipes deep within the canal shaft. .
